Assistant
Controller
Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies (TPIMS)
is seeking a full-time Assistant Controller who will
be responsible for the implementation and oversight
of the daily general accounting activities at the San
Diego location.
Essential job duties and responsibilities for this position
include:
- Compiles and analyzes financial information to
prepare entries to general and subsidiary ledger
accounts.
- Plans and implements improvements in technology
and automation of systems and processes and considers
procedural changes to maximize efficiency of operations
and/or services.
- Supervises and participates in the preparation
of various financial statements and reports.
- Prepares monthly billings for contracts, subcontracts,
sublease tenants, and others.
- Prepares/reviews grant and contract financial
reports for governmental and/or private granting
agencies.
- Ensures timely reconciliation of bank accounts
and general ledger accounts.
- Coordinates and oversees monthly financial close.
- Maintains cash flow forecast; Monitors accounts
payable and receivable.
- Maintains records of donor funds and restrictions.
- Prepares accurate and timely financial reports.
- Monitors compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting
Principles (GAAP).
- Monitors and documents accounting policies and
procedures and key controls.
- Prepares schedules and provides support for the
annual financial and compliance audits.
- Installs, modifies, documents, and coordinates
implementation of accounting systems and accounting
control procedures, and develops procedures to improve
existing systems.
- Collects data and assists in the preparation of
federal, state, and local reports and tax returns.
- Supervises two accounting department staff.
- Other specific duties as assigned and as outlined
in the detailed job description.
Education, Certifications, and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or a related field
- 5-7 years of relevant accounting/auditing experience
- Certified Public Accountant is preferred
- Prior experience in the non-profit sector is preferred
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities, and Attributes Required
- Advanced level Excel
- Demonstrated ability to automate and improve systems
and processes
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of GAAP
and OMB Circular A-122
- Experience with MIP or equivalent not-for-profit
accounting software
- Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy
- Ability to work very independently and with limited
direction
- Highly developed organizational skills

Lab Assistant
Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies is seeking
a part-time Lab Assistant to assist in performing
basic laboratory tasks, including culture bacteria;
making large quantities of plasmid DNA (maxiprep);
running DNA electrophoresis gels and taking photos;
DNA restriction digests; quantifying DNA concentration
by spectrophotometer and DNA electrophoresis gels;
making bacterial culture medium, bacterial culture
plates, and other lab buffers; autoclaving sterilization
procedure; and autoclaving biohazardous waste.
Candidates must be pursuing a degree in the sciences,
preferably a Biology major student with microbiology
and molecular biology lab experience.

Research Administrative Assistant
Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies is recruiting
for a Research Administrative Assistant who will be
responsible for assisting assigned Principal Investigators
with daily tasks, including but not limited to: compiling
and typing grant application forms, ensuring that grant
instructions and procedures are explicitly adhered to
prior to review by the grants office and ultimate electronic
or manual submission to governmental and other granting
agencies; maintaining journal databases; providing back-up
to the purchasing associate in ordering laboratory and
other supplies for the PI or other authorized lab staff
as may be necessary; scheduling appointments; distributing
and routing incoming mail; composing and typing routine
correspondence; filing; responding to telephone inquires,
routing calls, and/or taking messages; greeting visitors;
arranging travel schedules, registrations, and reservations;
making copies; preparing outgoing mail and overnight
courier packages; providing coverage in the shipping
and receiving office when required.
This position will also provide administrative and
clerical assistance for the scientific seminar series
hosted by the Institute and coordinates the scheduling,
communication and details relating to hosting vendor
visits and shows for scientific staff.
Successful candidates will possess a Bachelor's Degree
(B.S. or B.A.) from a four-year college or university;
or two to four years of related experience and/or
training; or the equivalent combination of education
and experience. Extreme attention to detail; strong
command of English grammar; and the ability to function
as a team-player are absolutely essential.

Technician
Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies is seeking
a part-time to possible full-time Research Technician
to perform work involving studies to determine the
mechanisms for the transport of free fatty acids across
cell membranes. Duties will include maintaining
cell cultures, subcellular fractionation, lipid vesicle
development, lipid biochemistry, and fluorescence imaging
and spectroscopy.
Candidates must have a B.S. degree in Biophysics,
Biochemistry, Biology or Cell Biology with 0-2 years
of experience.
