Alan Kleinfeld and his lab have been investigating how free fatty acids (FFA) prevent the immune system from killing tumor cells. Fresh breast tumor tissue from patients releases large amounts of FFA that inhibits T cells from killing tumor cells and non-tumor tissue from the same breast does not release FFA. This laboratory is screening for drugs that might prevent the FFA release and this would enable the immune system to clear the tumor.
